The MC4 connector is the most widely used quick-lock connector in photovoltaic systems, linking solar panels, strings and inverters. Choosing the wrong connector is one of the most common causes of voltage drop, overheating and field failures. Here is a practical checklist before you order.
1. Match Voltage and Current Ratings
Every MC4 connector carries a rated voltage and rated current. For mainstream 1500V PV systems, the connector must be rated for at least 1000–1500V DC. Current rating should comfortably exceed your string’s operating current — a common industry choice is 30A rated connectors for 20A+ strings, leaving safety margin.
2. Check IP Rating and Sealing
Outdoor arrays face rain, humidity and dust. Choose connectors with IP65 or higher ingress protection, and confirm the sealing gasket is factory-fitted. Poor sealing leads to corrosion and intermittent contact within 2–3 years.
3. Match Cable Size
MC4 connectors support a defined cable cross-section range (typically 2.5–6 mm² or 4–10 mm² depending on model). Using the wrong cable gauge breaks the seal and creates heat spots. Always confirm the cable size range before crimping.
4. Verify Standards and Certification
Look for compliance with IEC 62852 (connectors for PV systems) and related certification marks. Certificates protect your project against insurance and code-compliance issues — ask the supplier for certificate copies before purchase.
5. Count Mating Cycles
During installation, connectors are plugged and unplugged multiple times. High-quality MC4 connectors are tested for hundreds of mating cycles. Check the datasheet figure and keep spare connectors for field adjustments.
